Hey Unka Kraut....
Can you post up the process for seasoning cast iron? I remember you doing something with salt. We got a nice skillet and have been just brushing it off with water after use... and rubbing with some veggie oil and heating it up on the burner before putting it away. Anything else we should be doing? Thanks!

#1 Go to wegmans and buy 2 pounds of bacon
#2 Every day, for 4 days, cook 1/2 pound of bacon. feed it to the kids, rotty, garbage disposal, whatever. drain the liquid grease into a can. Do nothing else with the skillet except maybe set outside after draining where the dog wont get it. #3 after the last 8 oz. of bacon is cooked (assuming you have a regular 8" skillet) take bacon off and let the grease cool on the stove. It'll turn white as it is rendered. #4 take a flat metal spatula and scape all the grease out and throw away or feed to mutt #5 throw a half cup or cup of water in skillet, warm it and let boil. scape crud off bottom, don't scrape to bare metal, just get the crud off. dump crud/water mixture to sink and turn burner to low. #6 add a splash of water and some salt, more the better, and use a paper towel with the salt and rub the rest of crud out of skillet. the salt is the abrasive. #7 rinse the hell out of the skillet, get all the salt and crud out of there, and place on the warm burner to dry the pores of the pan. #8 when the pan is dry (you'll know)and warm, rub oil all through the interior, veggie oil, wok oil, canola, it don't matter. hang the pan on the wall and you are good to go. every time you use from that point on, just drain the grease, add water, boil it and scrape it, salt it, rinse it, warm it and oil it. just remember the more you use it the better it gets. once a month and it'll take a couple of years to get good. ours we use 6-7 times a week, can cook eggs on no problem. 2 rules #1 - never use soap #2 - never let the wife clean it

RULE #2 CANNOT BE OVER EMPHASIZED!
Went camping a couple months ago and took a pair of my VERY well-seasoned iron skillets along. Breakfast #1 went well as I saved the bacon grease, scraped the pans out at the creek's edge, heated slightly and wiped a little bacon grease back into them. Breakfast #2 started beautiful.... I poured the bacon grease into a cup, scraped the pans out a bit, set em aside to cool......... and turn around just in time to see the ole lady going at them with a jug of store-bought water, DISH SOAP, and a BRILLO SPONGE!! The camping trip nearly ended immediately, and she is now banned indefinitely from having ANY contact with my skillets. yes I know this thread is almost a year old.
